Sonoma Coast Volunteer Education Programs: Tidepool Education and Roving Naturalists

The tidepools on the Sonoma Coast State Park beaches are teeming with multitudes of flora and fauna. From virtually invisible colonies of aggregating anemones to sea stars tucked under kelp, there are fragile intertidal creatures everywhere.

Stewards has two programs for volunteers interested in working in the coastal tidepools. The School Group Education Program is offered on weekdays during the spring. State Parks Volunteer Tidepool Docents teach school groups how to safely observe and interact with the fascinating life forms of the intertidal zone. Students learn about the importance of protecting the fragile plants and animals that inhabit the tidepools. During spring and summer, at low tide on weekends, State Parks Volunteer Roving Naturalists are stationed on certain beaches to provide park visitors with a safe and educational experience exploring the tidepools.

Training for these programs takes place in early spring of each year and no prior experience is necessary. Potential docents are required to attend one of the three General Orientation Sessions, as well as the Tide Pool Docent Training.
